What Is Involved In Roof Repairs?

Carrick Plumbing & Roofing • December 27, 2024

Roof repairs require professional skill and knowledge. It is more than simply replacing old shingles and adding new tiles. There is a whole process involved, and what work is carried out is dependent on your roofing problem.

Carrick Plumbing & Roofing are experts when it comes to residential roofing services and commercial roofing, and we want to make sure that you know what to expect when it comes to your roof repair. Here are five things you can expect when you book in for roof repairs in Port Macquarie.

1. Thorough inspection

An initial inspection will be conducted to ensure that a roof repair is an adequate solution. Your roofing contractor will then remove old materials to determine the extent of damage to the roof.

Any materials that are severely damaged and no longer providing protection will be removed before starting. This will allow your roofer to inspect underlying elements to source any further damage, such as leaks, dry rot, or damaged joists.

2. Protect against damage

You don’t want to spend money on an uninsured or inadequate roofing company only to pay more when they damage your property! A good roofer will bring a tarp or dumpster for easy disposal to ensure that no damage takes place.

3. Prep shingles

This is perhaps the most important step involved in the roof repair process. Your roof surface is checked first to identify any loose or missing nails or rotting structures that may need to be fixed. This is known as shingle preparation.

It may be that your repair is related to shingle damage. This occurs when shingles curl – a sign that they are way past their life expectancy – or where shingles have lost granules. These granules protect your roof from UV rays. They will need to be replaced where this protection is no longer provided.

4. Carry out repairs

This is where any repairs relating to specific problems will take place also. These may include:

  • Water damage
  • Cracks and holes in tiles
  • Paintwork degradation
  • Damaged components
  • Signs of aging

These repairs are necessary to protect your roof against Australia’s inclement weather and, more specifically against termites, mould, and corrosion.

5. New roof material installation

Once the base of your roof has been repaired and laid out, it’s now time to install new roofing material. Common materials include asphalt roofing, built-up roof membranes, and self-adhesive rolls.

The new roofing material will ensure that your roof’s foundations are well protected from damage in the future. The material used varies on an individual basis.

6. Final inspection

No job is complete without a final inspection. Your roofer should make sure that the project has been completed sufficiently. Typically, they will make sure that seals are watertight and that drainage systems are secure.

All debris and disposable waste will also be removed and a clean-up service provided.
